Our college attaches great importance to the mechanical education and set up a higher mechanics laboratory as early as 1923. In 1957 the first applied mechanics major in our country was established. In 1958, mechanics electronic teaching was satrted. In 1962 vibration testing base was approved by the ministry of education, making the situation over where there had been only teaching in the mechanics education without scientific research before. In 1979 department of engineering was established. In 1981 the first doctor sation was set up. the first natinal key laboratory , mechanical structure in strength and vibration lab was built in 1985 and the first national key subject , mechanics was began in 1988. In 1994, mechanics and civil construction, architectural were merged as mechanics and engineering institute.
As one of the pioneers of the China aviation education, our school opened aviation courses as early as 1933 , established major in 1935 and established aviation department in 1942. In 2003, the joint aerospace institute was set up by our school and 603, 630, etc. In 2005, after withdrawing architectural mechanics , engineering college and aerospace college design-building, the aerospace institute was establishde relying on mechanical discipline .
In a long-term process of school-running , the school come to form the thought of teaching and characteristic with the solid foundation, important practical, strong ability, wide adaptability. Mechanical discipline has cultivated numerous talents in science and technology, education and management etc, such as: alumni Chen Huibo in 1964 session (6th standing committee of NPC, the past vice-president of metallurgy corporation in Shandong, the prize winner of national technical inventions and the national science and technology progress), alumni Tang Quan in 1966 session (the past deputy director of state seismological bureau), alumni Liu Peng in 1979 session (the prisident of national sports bureau , CPC central committeein in the 17th session), alumni Gao Huajian in 1982 session (the professor of Brown university in American, the past manager of Max-Planck-Institut in Germany) , alumni Suo Zhigang in 1985 session (a member of the U.S national academy of engineering, the professor of Harvard University), alumni ChenXi in 1994 section (the laureate of American President and the vice-professor of Columbia University), etc.
adhering to the traditional mechanical discipline running, the school of aerospace puts forward to the developing thought and aim of "setting top-ranking teams, building the first-class base, the first-class environment, and fostering the first-class talents". The institute is comprised of engineering department, scientific computing and structure design department, engineering department, experimental teaching demonstration center for mechanical, the key national laboratory in strength and vibration, the ministry of education portending sub-center of new aircraft joint research center for serving environment and multiple institute. With mechanical level 1 discipline doctoral specialties and aviation aerospace science and technology level subject graduate, the school formed a complete system for talent training and scientific research..
The construction for top-ranking teams is the leading work in the institute. The insititute is equptied with excellent teachers, including plenty of drs from famous colleges, such as Harvard University, university of Oxford, Cambridge university, Tokyo university and so on. The ratio doctors and high-level talents of teachers is high.while there are a wide across in kownlege and reseach of teachers, many of them are members in international academic organization. There are three chief scientists in the national 973 project , three changjiang scholars, three prize winners of national outstanding youth fund, ten talents of the ministry of education across (new) century. Since 2001 there are 20 elites from first-class universities oversea to introduce.
The college attaches great importance to the first class construction in teaching and scientific research base, strengthening practical teaching progress. In 2007 the school was allowed to build national demonstration center for mechanical experimental teaching; in the same year, the key laboratory in strength and vibration was evalued excellent and was passed for state key laboratory assessment in 2008. In 2009 it was allowed to build portending sub-centres of joint research center of ministry of education for service environment of new aircraft .
First-class environment is a important basis for the talent cultivation and scientific research . The strength of scientific research in the institute is very powerful. Since 2005, as the chief unit the school has received 3 projects of 973, presided over dozens of important projects ,including 973 project topics, "863" project, national major projects, national civil aerospace, national natural science foundation in key and so on. In 1984 national academic Journal -- Applied Mechanics Journal was allowed by the state science and technology commission to set up. International academic Journal---International Journal of Applied Mechanics (Imperial College Press, UK) was opened in 2009 . With the rich resources of international cooperation and exchanges, academic exchanges are frequent. having close cooperation relations with international first-class universities ,even Harvard University, university of Cambridge ,ect , averagely a academic report is given by an external researcher once a week, who are from abroad more than half of them . Institute established 10 teaching group on diffierent sbjuects, so according to ones’ own research teachers doing scientific research can chose to enter the group. In this way scientific frontier, the latest knowledges and research methods can be blended into the teaching of undergraduate and graduate students.
To foster first-class talents is the basic task of the institute. The college assumes three teaching tasks on engineering mechanics major, engineering and structure analysis mojor , aircraft design and engineering mojor, and the task of cultivating dr. and master graduate students in the subject of mechanics and aviation aerospace science and technology. It also undertakes the teaching of machinery, energy, materials, civil, electrical, management, economy and so on more than 10 disciplines undergraduates and postgraduates related mechanics curriculum in the whole university. The college will continuously explore new ways of thinking and new methods to cultivate first-class talents who own better abilities and wider adaptabilities.
